>> top story this morning, a search for a serial groper continues. >> here is a schedule that the man police are looking for. approached in broad day light while pushing a strolle melanie is live with the latest on the investigation. and there's got to be concern these incidents seem to be escalating. >> reporter: that's right. there has been attack of this natureery week for the past month and a half. and police do classify them as sexual assaults. most of them did happen in the springfield area. it does appear the suspect may have moves on. it was 4:20 in the afternoon last friday near south maple avenue and gibson street. a woman pushing a baby stroller becomes a target. she's distracted cause she's talking on her cell phone. a man grabs her and gropes her forceful. she finally manages to scream for

help and then the man runs away. >> i saw a woman with a baby and she was very animated and physically upset. i have a 13-year-old daughter who comes home from the bus. i don't think she's going to be coming home by herself. >> if you are taing on your cell phone, be aware of what's going on. if you feel like you are being followed, cross the street, try to find another person. hop into a store. flag down a car . call 911 or your local police department. trust that instinct that something isn't right. >> reporter: police are comparing suspect descriptions. he's about five foot six to five foot eight inches tall. hispanic with medium complex. and a skinny build. in several cases, the suspect was wearing t-shirt, jeans and red baseball cap. there have been six reported incidents like this in

the springfield area between september 7th and october 2nd in the springfield cases police said those victims reported those suspect had a short neatly trim beard. back to you. >> thank you. in the meantime a woman accused of going on a high speed ride from virginia to maryland is charged with first degree assault and reckless endangerment. angela crashed into a number of cars outside walter reed medical center. a civilian officer opened fire and hit the windshield. cobalt is a licensed nurses aid. >> a boy accused of killing his foster sister will go to a therapeutic group home. charged with involuntary manslaughter. this is not the right picture there. that means that he

wasn't admitting guilty but new there was enough evidence to convict him. the judge did not say how long the boy will spend at the group home but he did not be around any children and can only have contact with his family under supervision. now, two teen-aged brothers could be charged as adults for killing a 12-year-old girl in new jersey. the boys who are 15 and 17 asked autumn to come to their home on saturday to trade bicycle parts. the boy's mother found a disturbing facebook post. >> president obama hits the campaign trail and today will travel more than 5,000 miles in his busiest single day of re-election campaign. iowa, colorado, nevada and interview in la.

governor mitt romney is also on the road attending campaign events in two states today. yesterday, president obama campaigned in ohio. tomorrow he visits virginia, florida and back in ohio. mitt romney will campaign in nevada and iowa today. he appeared with paul ryan in colorado yesterday. and a reminder about our new election special. fox 5 news is our new show that deals with local and national candidates in the final weeks. you can see it at 6:30 every week night right here on fox 5. we're focusing on the maryland senate race. next week the candidates will debate live on fox 5 morning news. they will part next wednesday october 31st at 9:00 a.m. if you have a question for one of the

candidates send it and we'll try to use it. >> new this morning, pope benedict the 16th has named 6 new cardinals. one of them is american. archbishop james michael harvey. he was ordained in the 1970s. been in charge of running the household at the vatican since 1998. the other cardinals come from nigeria, philippines, lebanon, libya. also new today, the country's fastest highway opens up. you can drive 85 miles an hour legally on a 41 mile stretch of toll road in texas. the road is intended to relieve congestion. that high speed limit is apparently tied to how much money the state can collect in tolls. the contract with the

toll operator calls for a big cash payment. >> dc's speed cameras are raking in the dough. just one speed camera on new york avenue turned out nearly 117,000 tickets with fines coming to more than $11 million. that was over a 23 month period. dc law makers are debating legislation that would change current fines to bring them more in line to other jurisdictions. >> set off a heated debate in the big apple this year. >> dc may be the next one to crack down. >> council member has been pushing for a limit on super sized drinks and she may soon have the votes needed to get it passed. they would support a ban on super size drins in an effort to battle obesity. some of their colleagues and the mayor said they are open to

discuss the issue. there's nothing on paper just yet but leaders could consider a ban like the one in new york that caps sugary drinks at 16 ounces. a tax is another option. >> not something we can ignore. i know that people say oh, nanny state. if there is a serious public health problem, when hasn't the government looked to take steps to address it? >> if the issue is kids are drinking too much soda, it's up to parents to reduce that amount. that's a decision parents rather than the dc council should make. >> a similar effort by the dc council came up short in 2010 but only by one vote. expected to take up this issue again in the next few months so we'll have to see how this plays out and see if people get on board or see if it's too much in our personal business. back to you. >> all right. thank you. listen to this: driver less

challenges. companies have started combat to career initiatives designed to help this new generation of vets. this weekend the home depot will hold two workshops called mission transition. joining us now is alison she's the disstrakt manager. thanks for coming in. good to see you. >> thanks for having me. >> this is a nationwide event correct? >> you got it. we are so excited. 100 workshops on saturday from 2 to 5. and really we're targeting the military workforce. we want to give back to the men and women and help them prepare to the transitions. >> we have the information up on the screen now. and we'll keep that up there. but we'll also get to specifics about that in just a moment. first, i gave the number a short time ago, 720,000 unemployed veterans. that's a lot of people and it's people who they've been serving our country.

that's why they've been out of the workforce and they have a different skill set generally speaking. what are some of the issues? >> some of the things, the workforce is just so different. folks are transitioning into the workforce just how to apply. how to make sure skills are translated. employers understand what they can bring to the organization. these are some of the things we're targeting. >> and in fact, that's the workshops will focus on. resumes, how to interview? what are some of the other things. >> saturday the first one is searching strategies. we want to give them advice on where and

how to job search for opportunities. talk about the importance of networking and impact to network with employers. again, i reference this before but really help them alter their lingo and language that was important in the military workforce but make sure that translates to the have a sill i can't know employer. and the third workshop will be on hiring -- excuse me, interview skills. and how it is a little bit different from the military world. >> it is free. you do need to register. all the information is online. it's this saturday. space is limited. you want to log on as quickly as possible and get registered. >> i do want to mention that we've linked your web site to our web site.

this calm the entire time and he is up for adoption and he is dressed in his tux this morning because he's helping me talk about the charity that's going on. she's the president and ceo of the humane society. and events and marketing manager. good morning to both of you. hard to top carlos. >> he's pretty amazing the the love ball is pretty amazing too. it's important because it really is a key fundraiser in helping support her mission. tell people all that goes on. >> okay. we operate the public shelter. in addition to the basic operation, we do all kinds of programs like foster for animals. we work with rescues locally and nationally to get animals from the shelter into

closer to homes. we have a humane education program. >> and you know i don't think people realize in our area how fortunate we are that we have no kill shelters. >> animals are taken care of. we do everything we can to take care of these guys and, for example, carlos here as an luxatig patella. it's on his bag leg and what that means is his kneecap is hanging around. one of the things that the money that the humane society raises from generous donations is to take care of surgeries like his which is not an uncommon surgery. >> if you go to the event a week from saturday, buying that ticket spending money will help pay for surgeries like this so carlos can be wonderful. let's

talk about the dinner dancing and dogs. we have pictures from the event. so people can see how much fun it is. what's going to happen that night? >> typical charity except you get to bring your dog which everybody absolutely loves. there's a cocktail reception. we have a doggy bar there that night. >> explain the doggy bar. >> the doggy bar is just treats and yummy desserts for your dog. they get to enjoy the same stuff. >> i'm assuming the only cocktail they serve the dog is water. >> right. >> easy availability to take your dog out. >> absolutely. we have water for the dogs there. we have a pottie area outside. >> you have a silent auction and live auction. give me a little idea. >> so excited about silent live auctions. we have great items this year.
